Manchester United vs NewcastleFormer Newcastle United captain Steven Taylor has joined MLS title holders Portland Timbers, it has been revealed.

The experienced defender arrives on a free transfer with his contract at St James’ Park having expired in June, and he leaves the club after 21 years.

Taylor will be cleared to represent his new club once his international certificate arrives, and chances are he will go straight into the starting line-up.

The 30-year-old was once regarded one of Premier League’s best defenders, but he could only make 30 league outings over the last three years as he battled various injuries.

Taylor decided to leave Newcastle United after they were relegated to the Championship, and now embarks on a new challenge in his career.

The highly rated centre-back has received several call-ups to the England national team during the course of his career, but he never managed to win his first cap.
