Steve McClarenPremier League strugglers Newcastle United are set to appoint former England boss Steve McClaren as their new managed, BBC Sport has learned.

The 54-year-old has agreed a deal with the Magpies and he will officially sign a contract when he returns from a holiday.

McClaren had twice rejected the opportunity to take over the reigns at St James’ Park in the past, but it was third time the charm as the coach had been sacked by Derby County in May.

The experienced manager takes over from John Carver, who somehow managed to save Newcastle from relegation after some largely disappointing results.

The Magpies recorded a win on the final day of the league campaign to secure survival, defeating West Ham 2-0 at their St James’ Park.

Newcastle have so far released Jonas Gutierrez and Ryan Taylor from their contracts, but they are expected to spend heavily in the summer.
