Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been ruled out for approximately six weeks with a broken foot, the club have announced.

The Gunners released a statement saying that the Armenian wideman suffered a ‘fractured metatarsal’ and looks set to miss festive clashes against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool, as well as the New Years Day clash against Fulham. He is also likely to miss out on next month’s key clash against Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. He suffered the injury at the weekend as Arsenal coasted past Burnley 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium and had to be withdrawn at half-time.

Mkhitaryan has endured an inconsistent start to the new season. The 29-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists but now joins long-term absentees Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck on the sidelines.

Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal in January last season in a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez join Manchester United. He has made 37 appearances for the Gunners in that time.

In his absence, Unai Emery’s men take on Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, where they will be favourites according to bookmakers. The Gunners can be backed at 7/10 with William Hill to pick up maximum points against Chris Hughton’s men.
