Messi vs CarrickManchester United have moved to suggest that star midfielder Michael Carrick is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury in training.

The England international has had a surgery on an ankle problem and is now set to miss between ten and twelve weeks of action, meaning he will not be available for the start of the Premier League season.

“Michael Carrick has had surgery this morning on his left ankle ligaments and will be out for 10-12 weeks,” Manchester United tweeted.

New Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal confirmed the player’s injury on his official unveiling on Thursday, and no doubt the England international will be sorely missed in the coming months.

Manchester United hope to revive their title bid following what was a very disappointing season last term and the Old Trafford outfit are 6.50 (11/2) with Paddy Power to lift the Premier League title.

The Red Devils have so far recruited Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, while the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Alex Buttner have left the club.

Veteran defender Patrice Evra has signed a new one-year deal, but it is believed he is hoping to leave the club this summer with a view of joining Juventus.
