European champions Liverpool are potentially facing expulsion from the EFL Cup due to the fielding of an ineligible player during the competition.

Jurgen Klopp’s men got their campaign off to the perfect start as a much-changed side overcame MK Dons 2-0 in the week, goals either side of half-time from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever securing the win.

The player in question, Pedro Chirivella, came on as a substitute during the victory, playing the final 27 minutes of the match. However, problems surround the Spaniard’s international clearance, an issue that would have made him ineligible for the match.

A statement from the Merseyside club surrounding the issue read: “The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players.

“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

A severe punishment could see Liverpool banished from the cup, whilst a fine is also a possibility.

Following their progression in the competition, the Reds drew Premier League rivals Arsenal at home in the Fourth Round. They currently sit at odds of 9/2 with Betfair to win the League Cup for the first time since 2012.
