Daniel SturridgeLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers expects to have his key attacker Daniel Sturridge back in contention in early January.

The England star has missed the start of the season through a thigh injury and many believe that his absence has been the main reason behind team’s under-par performances in the opening exchanges.

However, it appears that Sturridge is finally closing in on his return as Brendan Rodgers has suggested the striker should be back after the Christmas fixtures.

“That will probably be just after the Christmas period,” Rodgers told reporters after the Arsenal game. “The first phase of his rehab was out in LA where we did some specific work with him there.

“He’s gone to Boston to pick up the next stage, then he’ll move on again to a specialist facility out there and hopefully in the early part of the new year he’ll be back and be somewhere close to being fit and playing.

“At some stage in January, we’ll look to get Dan back. That will be really exciting for this team.

“We’ll put him into the mix again and go back to that flow of our game and results, hopefully.”

Liverpool salvaged a draw against Arsenal by scoring deep into the injury time, but with the Reds still nine points behind Champions League positions, they are 10.00 (9/1) shot for a top 4 finish.
