Arsenal have reportedly upped their interest in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey this summer, according to The Athletic.

The report suggests that Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are particularly interested in swooping for the Ghanaian’s signature due to his relatively affordable release clause of €50m. However, it is also implied the North-Londoners would also aim to negotiate with Atletico for a lower price.

There were previous reports stating that the Spanish giants were extremely keen to tie down Partey to a longer-term contract. His current deal at the Wanda Metropolitano expires in the summer of 2023, with Atleti hoping to extend that by a further two years and doubling the release clause.

The 27-year-old has developed into one of the most effective holding midfielders in European football in his time with Atletico. After progressing through the club’s youth system, he has gone on to make 180 appearances for the club and scored 15 goals. He has also only missed out on three La Liga matches so far this season.

Atletico and Thomas are back in action on Friday night as they take on RCD Mallorca, where the midfielder spent a season on loan, at home. He sits at a price of 11/1 with Paddy Power to net the opening goal of the match against his former club.
