Arsenal have reportedly made their first move of the January transfer window with a loan offer for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard.

According to Sky Sports, Mikel Arteta is interested in bringing the Norwegian to the Emirates Stadium, with the player on the lookout for more first team opportunities.

However, it is apparently not going to be a straight-forward move, with others thought to be interested in him, including unnamed clubs in the Premier League.

Odegaard, now 22, has been with Real Madrid since 2015 having arrived from Stromsgodset. In the time since, he has enjoyed loan spells with Heerenveen, Vitesse Arnhem and Real Sociedad – the latter of which seeing him forge a name in the Spanish top-flight.

He has found opportunities hard to come by this season under Zinedine Zidane though, making just nine appearances in all competitions, just five of those being starts.

Should Odergaard arrive at the Emirates, he will surely replace the outgoing Mesut Ozil, who is currently on the verge of a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce. His departure continues a max exodus from North London, with Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac and William Saliba all leaving during the winter transfer window.

The Gunners are in action at the weekend against Southampton in the FA Cup. They can be backed at odds of 5/4 with William Hill to win the match and progress to the fifth round.
