Liverpool

With five European Cups to their name as well as 18 league titles, Liverpool Football Club is rightly considered to be the most successful English club ever. The club was established in 1892 and became a member of the Football League a year later. The Reds play their game at Anfield and boast a fierce local rivalry with Everton as well as another one with Manchester United.

Club’s most successful period was during the 70s and 80s, when legendary managers Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley helped the Reds win 11 league titles and 7 European trophies. Liverpool fans were involved in two major tragedies, with the Heysel disaster in 1985 claiming the lives of 39 Juventus supporters and Hillsborough tragedy in 1989, when 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

Club History

Liverpool was founded in 1892 by John Houlding, who was then Everton president and owner of the Anfield stadium. The club was originally named Everton FC and Athletic Grounds Ltd, but soon changed its name to Liverpool. The club joined the Second Division in 1894 and immediately gained promotion to the top flight. The Reds won their first league titles in 1901 and 1906, but they had to wait until 1922 and 1923 to win the next two First Division trophies.

The Reds went without a trophy until 1947, when they won their fifth league title. In 1959 Scottish manager Bill Shankly took over the reigns at Anfield and soon laid down the law, letting go no less than 24 first team players. His work soon paid off as the Reds were not only promoted to the First Division in 1962, after eight seasons in the second tier, but they also won the league title after just two years.

The club continued to win domestic honours over the next few years, but in 1975 Shankly decided to hand the reigns to his assistant Bob Paisley. Under Paisley, the club won back to back league titles and their first European Cup in 1977, before successfully defending the European Cup trophy the following season. The Reds won the total of 21 trophies under Bob Paisley before he retired in 1983.

Liverpool continued to win domestic and European honours until 1990, when they won what would prove to be their last league title. The arrival of Rafa Benitez did little to improve the club’s domestic fortunes, but the Spaniard won the Champions League title in 2005, thus writing his name in club’s history. After several unsuccessful Premier League campaigns, Rafa Benitez was replaced by Roy Hodgson, who in turn made room for club icon Kenny Dalglish to take over. The Reds have shown a massive improvement under Dalglish, with club’s good results followed by heavy investment in the playing squad, but the Reds continue to search for the first league title since 1990.

Key Players

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have spent their entire careers at Anfield even if they were repeatedly linked with top European clubs and they have an iconic status at the club. They were key to every success the club have achieved over the years, but also held their ground when things were not going as they should and are, therefore, seen as true icons of the club. New signing Luis Suarez is also developing into a key player at Anfield, with his goals and assists helping the Reds stay very close to the top of the Premier League standings.
