Wigan vs Everton

Sitting in the relegation zone on goal difference following the 4:2 defeat to Sunderland, Wigan have no choice but to try and win this game, and every other game for that matter. Everton ended the seven-match unbeaten run as they lost at Old Trafford, but the good performance against Manchester United will give them something to build on.

The pressure’s on Wigan

Wigan have spent big part of the season in the relegation zone and it’s safe to say that nobody will be surprised if they eventually go down. Roberto Martinez’s side have played some good games this season but they have also showed the lack of character and determination needed to survive the competition such as the Premiership and that could end up costing them the Premier League status. The weekend’s game against Sunderland, the team that had lost four games in a row, conceding 12 goals in the process, is the perfect proof. The Latics scored the opening goal and when they were expected to finish off a team completely out of confidence following the aforementioned dismal run and without a single striker on the pitch, they managed to concede four goals and are now in a very difficult position. Now it is them who are out of confidence and under big pressure to beat Everton, the team that have been playing some great football of late.

Maynor Figueroa returns to the side following a two-match ban, meaning that Roberto Martinez will have full squad to choose from.

Undeserved defeat at Old Trafford

Largely struggling to fulfill their undoubted potential, Everton have been lingering in the bottom part of the table, really close to the relegation zone, but the Toffees have hit the ground running in the crucial stage of the league campaign and are now in a position to fight for the European places. The Toffees’ seven-match unbeaten run did came to an end at Old Trafford, leaving them five points adrift of sixth-placed Liverpool, but the great showing against arguably the best team in England proved that Everton are in great form at the moment. With Coleman, Rodwell and Cahill back into action following the spell on the sidelines, David Moyes’ side are expected to continue the rich vein of form and end this season on a high. The state of being under no pressure at the moment should give the Toffees an edge in the Wigan game.

Mikel Arteta is closing in on his comeback from a hamstring problem, but Louis Saha and Marouane Fellaini remain sidelined.

Verdict

Wigan are playing without confidence at the moment and are under extreme pressure before the clash with Everton, which is unlikely to have a good effect on the squad. Everton, on the other hand, have been in remarkable form of late and they have got a great chance to record another good result.
