Sevilla vs Liverpool

Separated by only a point at the top of Group E, Sevilla and Liverpool lock horns in one of the tastiest Champions League encounter of the Tuesday match programme. Last season’s Europa League finalists are both playing an exciting brand of football and we fully expect the game at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to be a proper firecracker.

Top Spot on The Line

Sevilla fought well to deny Liverpool in the opening match of this season’s Champions League group stage when Correa neutralising the 2-1 lead at Anfield earlier in September.

The Rojiblancos stumbled on their way forward with a heavy 5-1 defeat away at Spartak Moscow and now prepare to welcome the in-form Reds with a top spot on the line. Eight goals scored and as many conceded were enough for the total of eight points after four matches in the Champions League group stage for Sevilla, only one adrift of the leaders Liverpool. Sevilla are lacking consistency this season with their form being too erratic and unpredictable at times. The La Liga side managed to click on three win across three competitions before suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona at the beginning of the month but got back to winning ways after the international break with another 2-1 result over Celta Vigo. Interestingly enough, Sevilla recorded three 2-1 wins and one such defeat in their last four matches and that is a good subject for analysis.

Walter Montoya is a selection doubt with his hip injury whereas Sevilla will have a couple of confirmed absentees which include Carrico, Jose Mena and Nicolas Pareja.

Test of Reds’ Credentials

Following their slow start to the Champions League season, Liverpool went a gear up with consecutive wins over Slovenia giants Maribor.

Compelling wins which saw Liverpool score 10 games across both legs were a timely morale boost for Jurgen Klopp’s men but not exactly a real test to their continental credentials even though Reds head into the final stage of group battle from the leading spot. September and October were not exactly the best of months for the Premier League giants but their 4-1 loss at the hands of Tottenham was the tipping point which initialled a four-match winning run. Liverpool conceded only one goal during that time to improve their much criticised and scrutinised defensive record and will feel utterly positive ahead of their trip to Spain. The 3-0 win over Southampton this weekend will act as a huge push in the back with Mohamed Salah in imperial form and Klopp will expect his men to maintain the level of performance.

Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne and Danny Ward are ruled out through injuries whereas winger Adam Lallana di recover from his thigh injury but is not expected to be risked.

Verdict

Even though it could be extremely difficult to predict who gets to come out on top in this fixture, one thing is for sure – there will be goals. Both Sevilla and Liverpool like to go forward and attack and we fully expect an openly-contested clash.
