Sampdoria vs Lazio

With only three points separating them in the Serie A standings, Sampdoria and Lazio lock horns on Sunday night in one of the most interesting clashes in Italy this weekend.

Samp looking to bounce back

The 4-1 Coppa Italia victory during the week was not enough to remove the bitter taste following the 3-0 Serie A defeat at Bologna last week.

The Samp suffered a huge blow despite being the more dominant side on the pitch and will now be looking for a swift return to winning ways against Lazio. Marco Giampaolo’s side have enjoyed a rather positive campaign thus far with an impressive 3-2 victory over champions Juventus coming as a great prize for their efforts but the latest defeat at the hands of Bologna was a reality check and a wakeup call for Blucerchiati. Sampdoria continue to struggle away from home where they’ve only managed eight points out of possible 21 but the good news they are now set to welcome hot-shots Lazio on home turf. As hosts, Sampdoria have gone a perfect six from six and this positive trend is theirs to continue.

Nicola Murru is expected to continue to deputise for the injured Ivan Strinic at left-back. Karol Linetty is likely to miss the game through a thigh injury whereas Giampaolo will have no other selection issues.

Lazio slowing down

They’ve been one of the most surprising teams of the league last season and Lazio headed into the new campaign on a similarly high note.

Only one defeat and one draw out of 16 matches across all competitions is a record to be proud of, but Simone Inzaghi appear to be losing the momentum over the past three matches. The 2-1 Derby della Capitale defeat at the hands of fierce rivals AS Roma came as a huge blow and Lazio appear to be unable to recover from it. The identical 1-1 home stalemates against Vitesse and Fiorentna followed and it will be up to Inzaghi to talk his side into raising their heads high and getting back to winning ways. This slight slump must not become a major rut as Lazio risk Sampdoria catching up on them in fifth place in the Serie A standings. Lazio should earn some confidence from the fact they collected six wins from seven on the road this term which indicates they are more than capable of putting an end to Sampdoria’s perfect home record.

Felipe Anderson and Lucas Nani are injured and will miss the trip to Sampdoria. Davide De Gennaro is also unavailable through injury whereas Federico Marchetti is suspended.

Verdict

Both Sampdoria and Lazio have gone through minor blips recently and will be keen on getting back up to their feet. We certainly expect both sides to go hard from the off and there could be fireworks when these two exciting sides lock horns on Sunday.
