Dutch trainingNetherlands national team have suffered a major blow ahead of the World Cup semi-final against Argentina as striker Robin van Persie picked up a stomach bug.

The Manchester United striker trained individually on Tuesday, which is enough to suggest he could miss the all-important clash against Los Albicelestes.

“Robin van Persie has an intestinal problem and I didn’t want to take a risk,” said Louis van Gaal. “He is a very important player for us. In principle, my captains always play, but only if they’re 100%.”

There were some good news for the experienced coach though as Nigel de Jong, Leroy Fer and Ron Vlaar all trained after recovering from injury.

Nigel de Jong recovered from a groin problem much sooner than expected and he could now even start against Argentina.

“If his reaction is good and he can play, then the miracle can come true,” Van Gaal added.

Following the impressive display in the quarter-final against Costa Rica, Oranje are 3.40 (12/5) to win the game in regular time.
