Zulte-Waregem vs PSV Eindhoven preview

Zulte Waregem vs PSV EindhovenBelgian high-flyers Zulte-Waregem face a mountain to climb following the 2-0 defeat in the first leg, but an early goal for the hosts could change everything, which is why PSV Eindhoven need to take the return leg very seriously.

Essevee produced quite a coup last season by finishing the league campaign in second place, mere four points adrift of champions Anderlecht.

The team held on to the second position in the play-offs to ensure their first ever Champions League qualification, but they could do little to avoid a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the 3rd qualifying stage clash against PSV Eindhoven.

Nevertheless, it was club’s decision to strip regular captain Davy De Fauw and appoint Chelsea loanee Thorgan Hazard instead just few hours before the match that caused a huge unrest among the players and it was certainly the main reason behind a shocking performance in the Netherlands.

With Hazard returning the captain’s armband following heavy criticism from the fans, the atmosphere in the team should improve, meaning there could be some value in odds of 4.75 (15/4) offered at BetVictor on home win.

After resting a number of first team regulars in weekend’s victory over Kortrijk, boss Francky Dury should recall the likes of Habibou, Skulason and Mamoutou N’Diaye to the starting line-up.

Talented midfielder Junior Malanda has signed a long-term deal with Wolfsburg, but he has immediately returned to Zulte-Waregem on a six-month loan.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Bossut – De Fauw, Colpaert, D’Haene, Verboom – Skulason, N’Diaye – Leye, Berrier, Hazard – Habibou.

PSV Eindhoven couldn’t prevent Ajax from winning the third straight Eredivisie title last term, while they were also defeated in the KNVB Beker final.

With Kevin Strootman, Jeremain Lens, Erik Pieters and Dries Mertens all leaving, they were predicted a difficult season, but their youthful squad have already shown a great deal of promise.

Having bolstered their ranks with Adam Maher, Karim Rekik, Stijn Schaars, Jefrey Bruma and Santiago Arias, the Philips Stadium outfit largely impressed in pre-season, beating the likes of Hannover and Fenerbahce in their final two warm-up game.

PSV then turned on the style to record a 2-0 triumph over Zulte-Waregem in the first official match, and they are now 1.83 (5/6) with Paddy Power to record another victory.

Unlike his counterpart, Philip Cocu fielded his strongest side in weekend’s victory over ADO Den Haag, although it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Locadia will again be preferred to Tim Matavz.

Apart from long-term casualty Luciano Narsingh, Cocu will have fully fit squad to choose from in the return leg.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Zoet – Brenet, Bruma, Rekik, Willems – Wijnaldum, Schaars, Maher – Bakkali, Matavz, Depay.
