Viktoria Plzen vs Zeljeznicar preview

Viktoria Plzen vs CFR ClujCzech Gambrinus Liga champions Viktoria Plzen start the Champions League qualifiers with a home game against Bosnian side FK Zeljeznicar, a side that have recorded six straight defeats in the competition.

One of the oldest clubs in Czech Republic needed exactly 100 years to win their first league title, having finally broken the duck in 2011.

The team, nonetheless, continued with impressive showings and after narrowly missing out on title defence in 2012, they managed to reclaim the title last term.

Meanwhile, they have showed a lot of promise in their first ever Champions League campaign two years ago, reaching the group stage only to be pitted against Barcelona and AC Milan.

Viktoria now aim to repeat the success and having kept the entire squad together, it is hardly surprising they are 1.17 (1/6) favourites with Coral to win their opening game against Zeljeznicar.

While Tomas Wagner and Jakub Hora returned to the club from loan spells, internationals Jan Rezek and Milan Petrzela both arrived to further increase competition for places.

Viktoria did lose the Czech Super Cup match to Jablonec, but only because coach Pavel Vrba opted to rest his star players for the Champions League clash.

Forward Michal Duris misses out with a broken rib, but Daniel Kolar and Milan Petrzela have resumed full training.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Kozacik – Reznik, Prochazka, Cisovsky, Limbersky – Darida, Horvath – Rajtoral, Kolar, Petrzela – Tecl.

One of the most famous clubs in Yugoslavia have endured some hard times over the years, but they have at least managed to become the dominant force in Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Following several very difficult years, FK Zeljeznicar won back to back titles in 2012 and 2013, but their performances in European competitions have left a lot to be desired.

The Bosnian giants have lost last six matches in Champions League qualifiers and the trend looks likely to continue against very good Viktoria Plzen side.

Amar Osim’s side have largely struggled in pre-season, recording 4-0 and 5-1 defeats to Aluminij and Metalist Kharikiv respectively, while they face all sorts of problems ahead of the first competitive match of the season.

Top scorer Edin Adilovic will be sorely missed as he is out through injury, while Benjamin Colic, Muamer Svraka and Srdjan Stanic are all suspended.

With Josip Kvesic, Nermin Zolotic and Danijal Brkovic all out injured, it is perfectly clear Zeljeznicar face a mountain to climb in Plzen.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Hadzic – Zeljkovic, Skaljic, Kerla, Urdinov – Sadikovic, Jamak – Bucan, Hasanovic, Tomic – Selimovic.
