Salzburg vs Fenerbahce preview

Fener vs PSVRed Bull Salzburg will be hoping to keep their Champions League dream alive after the clash with Fenerbahce, who ultimately had their UEFA ban overturned and were allowed to take part in the qualifying stages.

The Austrian club have been on a constant uptrend ever since they were bought by Red Bull in 2005, and have since won no less than four league titles.

However, the team have been far from impressive in Europe and they have yet to reach the Champions League group stages.

After surprisingly missing out on the league title last term, Salzburg look more determined than ever to make things right this season, and they seem to be on the right track.

While signing Peter Gulacsi, Jakob Jantscher and Yordi Reyna, the club management kept the entire squad together, which has allowed the team to hit the ground running early on.

And even if the opening 5-1 away win over Wiener Neustadt was by no means a surprise, the 5-1 triumph over reigning champions Austria Wien is enough to suggest Roger Schmidt’s side are on top of their game at the moment.

Taking that into consideration, there may be some value in odds of 2.50 (3/2) offered at William Hill on home win.

There are no fresh injury worries for Roger Schmidt, but Isaac Vorsah, Dusan Svento, Valentino Lazaro, Rodnei and Franz Schiemer remain sidelined.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-3-2): Gulacsi – Schwegler, Ramalho, Hinteregger, Ulmer – Ilsanker – Meilinger, Kampl, Mane – Soriano, Alan.

Turkish giants Fenerbahce go into this clash as favourites to go through, but this is going to be anything but a walk in the park for them.

The main problem is that this is going to be their first competitive match this term seeing as how their domestic season does not start for another three weeks.

Club chiefs have done well to reinforce the squad in the summer despite not knowing whether the UEFA ban will be upheld, but Fenerbahce were eventually allowed to take part in this year’s European competitions.

The Canaries have signed Michal Kadlec, Bruno Alves, Samuel Holmen and Alper Potuk so far, while there were no major departures.

However, having lost the final warm-up game to PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahce don’t look too tempting at odds of 3.00 (2/1) offered at Stan James to win in Austria.

With no new selection problems to report, coach Aykut Kocaman is likely to field the same side that started the final friendly game.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Demirel – Irtegun, Yobo, Alves, Kadlec – Meireles, Topal, Cristian – Kuyt, Sow, Erkin.
