Partizan Belgrade vs Shirak preview

Partizan vs ShirakPartizan Belgrade are in the driving seat after they scored a late equalizer in Armenia, but Shirak are not yet ready to give up having showed in the first leg they can match their more illustrious opponents.

The Serbian giants may have recently secured their sixth successive league trophy, but European success continues to elude them.

Since reaching the Champions League group stages in 2010, losing all six group games, Partizan have failed to repeat the success, having been eliminated by Genk and AEL Limassol last two times.

However, the team have never experienced so many problems at their first hurdle, having been completely outclassed by minnows Shirak in the Champions League 2nd qualifying stage.

Vuk Rasovic’s side are in a good position to qualify after Vladimir Volkov scored a late goal to secure an undeserved draw, but odds of 1.18 (2/11) offered at Stan James on home win are not too tempting.

The boss has hinted he is going to make several changes to the starting line-up, but it remains to be seen whether key defender Ivan Ivanov will be considered after his move to Basel fell through.

First choice keeper Vladimir Stojkovic is definitely unavailable as he searches for a new club, while striker Marko Scepovic looks set to be recalled.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Lukac – Aksentijevic, Ostojic, Stankovic, Volkov – Malbasic, Markovic, Jojic, Ilic – Scepovic, Kojic.

FC Shirak have long been considered an average Armenian side, more recently finishing the 2011 league campaign in seventh place.

However, the team showed a massive improvement to win their fourth league title last season, which gave them a chance to test their skills in Champions League qualifiers.

Despite being considered major underdogs in the clash with Partizan, Vardan Bichakhchyan’s side produced a stunning performance in the first leg, completely outclassing their more illustrious opponents.

The hosts created a number of clear-cut chances either side of David Hakobyan’s opener, but were eventually punished for their profligacy, with their opponents scoring the equalizer in the dying moments of the match.

Even so, with Shirak clearly in much better shape than their opponents, there is some value in backing the visitors with +2 Asian handicap at 1.85 (17/20) offered at Betfair.

Boss Vardan Bichakhchyan is unlikely to make any changes following such a good performance in the first match.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Harutyunyan – Kyere, Kadio, Hovhannisyan, Davtyan – Diop, Muradyan, Aleksanyan, Hakobyan – Barikyan, Fofana.
