Fenerbahce vs Salzburg preview

Fenerbahce vs SalzburgLast-gasp penalty goal scored by Cristian Baroni to make it 1-1 ensured Fenerbahce remain the favourites to go through, but Salzburg are not without chances in the return leg.

Despite clinching Champions League qualification through league finish, the Turkish giants were kept in dark over their participation in this year’s edition of Europe’s elite competition.

After their UEFA ban was finally overturned, the team didn’t have enough time to prepare for their 3rd round qualifying clash against Salzburg, so no wonder they didn’t look too convincing in Austria.

However, the Turks showed a lot of character to come from a goal behind and earn a 1-1 draw, although they were pretty fortunate to be awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the match.

Boss Aykut Kocaman will certainly demand to see an improvement in the return leg, with Fenerbahce 1.90 (9/10) with BetVictor to qualify with a win.

The coaching staff faces a genuine selection headache ahead of the return leg, with a number of important players either sidelined or doubtful through injury.

Egemen Korkmaz, Gokhan Gonul, Erten Ersu and Emre Belezoglu are definitely out, while Mehmet Topal and Pierre Webo are carrying minor knocks.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Demirel – Topuz, Yobo, Alves, Kadlec – Meireles, Topal, Potuk – Kuyt, Webo, Cristian.

In spite of enjoying a lot of success on domestic stage of late, Champions League remains just a dream for Red Bull Salzburg.

Following a number of unsuccessful attempts, the Austrians were determined to make things right this term, but they were pretty unlucky to be pitted against Fenerbahce in the third qualifying round.

Salzburg, nonetheless, produced a very good performance in the first leg and were on the verge of an important victory, only to be denied by an injury-time penalty goal.

Nothing is lost just yet, especially since Roger Schmidt’s side appear to be in much better shape than their opponents, with Salzburg now 2.75 (7/4) at Paddy Power to make it to the play-offs after all.

The manager is set to recall his regular starters after most of them were rested in the weekend’s draw with Wacker Innsbruck, but Isaac Vorsah, Valentino Lazaro, Dusan Svento, Rodnei and Franz Schiemer are all out injured.

Havard Nielsen has picked up an injury at the weekend, while Alan and Christian Schwegler are injury doubts.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Gulacsi – Schwegler, Ramalho, Hinteregger, Ulmer – Meilinger, Ilsanker, Kampl, Mane – Alan, Soriano.
