Borussia Dortmund vs Shakhtar Donetsk preview

Shakhtar vs BorussiaLate goal score by Mats Hummels in the first leg could make all the difference in the return leg, with Borussia clearly in the driving seat after the 2-2 draw in Donetsk.

This basically means Shakhtar will be forced to chase the rest in Dortmund, but having done so well in Europe this term, the Ukrainians are clearly not without chances.

Borussia Dortmund continue to falter on domestic stage, where they are already out of the running for two major titles, but their Champions League campaign is progressing quite nicely.

After doing well to pip Real Madrid, Ajax and Manchester City to the first place in the group of death, the Millionaires held Shakhtar to a 2-2 draw in Ukraine to edge closer to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side were eliminated from the DFB Pokal, but they returned to winning ways at the weekend, recording a 3-1 triumph over Hannover in the league.

Borussia are now 1.67 (2/3) favourites with William Hill to see off Shakhtar in the return leg, and 1.25 (1/4) at Ladbrokes to qualify.

Jurgen Klopp will have Mario Gotze and Lukasz Piszczek back to the side after they were rested at the weekend, but Mats Hummels is doubtful with a bout of flu.

The highly rated centre-back missed the last two games, with Felipe Santana deputizing, although the Brazilian was at fault for the only goal BVB conceded to Hannover.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Weidenfeller – Piszczek, Subotic, Hummels, Schmelzer – Gundogan, Kehl – Blaszczykowski, Gotze, Reus – Lewandowski.

Shakhtar Donetsk have done more than enough to warrant their place in the Champions League knockout stages, but it remains to be seen how far they can go.

Mircea Lucescu’s side largely impressed in group stage, beating reigning champions Chelsea to a place in the second phase, while playing some great football in the process.

The first leg against Borussia came at a very bad time for the Ukrainians as their domestic season was still some three weeks away, but they, nonetheless, produced a very good attacking showing and were unlucky not to record an advantage ahead of the return leg.

However, having scored 23 goals in last 12 European games on the road, Shakhtar can be trusted to score at least once at Signal-Iduna Park, with Stan James paying 1.53 (8/15) if that occurs.

Considering that the Ukrainians managed to outplay both Chelsea and Juventus on the travels, there may be some value in backing them to qualify at odds of 4.50 (7/2) offered at 888sport.

Important defender Oleksandr Kucher returns to the side after missing the first leg through suspension, while Douglas Costa is also expected to start after impressing at the weekend.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Pyatov – Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Rat – Hubschman, Fernandinho – Teixeira, Mkhitaryan, Costa – Adriano.
