MercadoEuropa League holders Sevilla have announced the signing of Argentine defender Gabriel Mercado from River Plate.

Los Rojiblancos will pay €2.2 million for the experienced defender, while his previous employers will also be entitled to 20% of the next transfer fee.

Mercado can operate at both centre-back and right-back, and he arrives as a replacement for captain Coke, who had joined Schalke earlier this week.

The 29-year-old spent last four years with the Millionaires, making a total of 99 league appearances for the club.

Mercado made the headlines when he scored two goals for Argentina at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, as Los Albicelestes finished as runners up for the second time in a row.

This will be his first foray into European football, having previously represented Racing Club de Avellaneda, Estudiantes La Plata and River Plate.
