Real Madrid vs Sevilla preview

Arguably the most interesting tie in the Copa del Rey last 16 stage will see Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League holders Sevilla.

The first leg takes place at Santago Bernabeu and it will be the first match for both sides after a two-week break from action.

Real Madrid are enjoying another successful season under Zinedine Zidane and they have recently added the Club World Cup title to their trophy cabinet.

However, despite impressing in 2016, los Blancos need to continue in the same manner between now and the end of the campaign if they want to win few more major trophies.

Three matches against Europa League holders Sevilla will mark the start of the new year as the two sides will also contest a La Liga game at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan three days after the Copa del Rey return leg.

Real Madrid head into the first game against los Rojiblancos in very good spirits, despite the fact that they are missing some important players, and they are 1.40 (2/5) favourites to claim maximum points.

Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez continue to miss out, while Sergio Ramos is unlikely to be risked as he has yet to fully recover from injury.

Having won last ten meetings with Sevilla in Madrid, Real Madrid have rightly been made favourites to win the first leg.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Casilla – Danilo, Pepe, Nacho, Marcelo – Modric, Casemiro, Kroos – Isco, Benzema, Ronaldo.

Even if Jorge Sampaoli had a tough task on his hands after Unai Emery left, the Chilean has largely impressed at the start of his career in Andalucia.

The Copa America winner not only helped los Rojiblancos secure progress to the Champions League knockout stages, but he managed to improve their results in La Liga as well.

For the first time in quite a while, Sevilla sit mere four points adrift of league leaders midway through the campaign, although Real Madrid do have a game in hand.

But, considering they sit just one points behind mighty Barcelona, los Rojiblancos have clearly done a lot of things right this term.

Having had little success in previous meetings with los Blancos, Sevilla players will be keen to try and shock their more illustrious opponents, with away win paying 8.00 (7/1).

Jorge Sampaoli welcomes back full-back Mariano to the side, but Daniel Carrico, Benoit Tremoulinas, Michael Krohn-Dehli and Sergio Escudero are out injured.

Probable starting line-up (3-4-2-1): Soria – Rami, Pareja, Kolodziejczak – Mariano, Nasri, N’Zonzi, Sarabia – Vazquez, Iborra – Vietto.
