Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid preview

Atletico Madrid vs Rayo VallecanoThe mere fact that this match is considered a derby of the round in Spanish La Liga shows how much both Atletico and Rayo have progressed over the last year or so.

Rayo Vallecano largely impressed upon their return to the elite division, producing some memorable performances last season, but the team were expected to suffer the second season syndrome, especially after staying without top scorer Michu.

However, no such thing happened this term as Paco Jemez’s side continued where they left off and now find themselves in a position to fight for Champions League places.

Despite losing to Sevilla at the weekend, los Franjirrojos remain just two points behind fourth-placed Malaga and now aim to continue their excellent home form against very good Atletico side.

After recording comfortable wins in their last three home fixtures, Rayo Vallecano are 3.60 (13/5) with Ladbrokes to make it four in a row.

Jordi Amat and Javi Fuego will both be in contention after recovering from injury, but Mikel Labaka remains out with an ankle problem.

Playmaker Piti returns to the side from suspension, while new signing Raul Tamudo could be handed his debut.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Ruben – Tito, Galvez, Amat, Casado – Trashorras, Fuego – Bangoura, Dominguez, Piti – Baptistao.

Atletico Madrid are enjoying by far their best season in years and Diego Simeone’s side are showing no signs of slowing down.

Los Colchoneros are now on the verge of qualifying for Copa del Rey final, while their La Liga campaign remains a huge success.

Atletico Madrid have not quite managed to keep up with mighty Barcelona, as they are now nine points off the top of the standings, but they have recently restored their seven-point advantage over arch rivals Real Madrid, which is an incredible achievement.

Having returned to winning ways in La Liga by beating Real Betis last weekend, los Colchoneros are now 2.20 (6/5) with Stan James to see off Rayo as well.

With all players returning from international duty unscathed, including Radamel Falcao, Diego Simeone should have nearly full squad to choose from.

Emiliano Insua is doubtful with a muscle injury, but that won’t be a problem now that Filipe Luis returns from suspension. Diego Costa is banned after accumulating five yellow cards.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Courtois – Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis – Mario, Gabi – Adrian, Koke, Turan – Falcao.
