Atletico Madrid vs Celta preview

After crashing out of Copa del Rey, Atletico Madrid will attempt to cement their top 4 position in Spanish La Liga, with Celta Vigo the next obstacle.

The Sky Blues also failed to qualify for the Copa del Rey final, and they can now shift their focus back to the league competition.

Following a number of thoroughly successful campaigns, Atletico haven’t exactly managed to live up to the expectations this term, but there is still time for los Colchoneros to make things right.

Diego Simeone’s men made quite an effort in the Copa del Rey semis, but eventually had to settle for a 3-2 aggregate loss to Barcelona, so it’s now two major competitions instead of three for them.

The Champions League knockout stage clash against Bayer Leverkusen does not take place for another ten days, meaning that league games against Celta Vigo and Sporting Gijon will serve as an opportunity to further improve their La Liga position.

Atletico Madrid have been made 1.40 (2/5) favourites to defeat the Sky Blues on Sunday evening, having won last three league games at Vicente Calderon without conceding.

With Duego Godin sidelined through injury, Stefan Savic and Lucas Hernandez will form the centre-back pairing against Celta Vigo.

Antoine Griezmann and Nicolas Gaitan missed the first training after the Barcelona game, but they should be in contention.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Moya – Juanfran, Savic, Hernandez, Filipe Luis – Koke, Saul, Gabi, Gaitan – Griezmann, Gameiro.

Celta Vigo have been on the constant rise over the last few years, but they have just missed a glorious opportunity to make it to the Copa del Rey final.

The Sky Blues were up against Deportivo Alaves in the semis, but they suffered a 1-0 aggregate defeat, failing to score a single goal in two games.

It is fair to say that the players and everybody at the club are quite disappointed by the missed opportunity and this is clearly not the best time to be facing mighty Atletico Madrid.

Celta did win their last La Liga fixture on the road, but they had suffered four defeats and two draws in the previous six, meaning they’ve got plenty of reason for concern ahead of the trip to the capital.

Claudio Beauvue and Ruben Blanco are not yet ready to return into action, whereas we should see some changes to the side that faced Deportivo Alaves on Wednesday.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Alvarez – Mallo, Cabral, Roncaglia, Jonny – Wass, Radoja, Hernandez – Aspas, Guidetti, Bongonda.
