shaqiriSerie A giants Roma are eyeing Stoke City star Xherdan Shaqiri in a possible January deal, according to reports from the Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport.

Giallorossi are on the lookout for winter reinforcements and a replacement for Mohamed Salah who is due to play for Egypt at the 2017 Arfica Cup of Nations in Gabon, which is played from 14 January to 5 February.

Former Bayern Munich forward Xherdan Shaqiri has been identified as the top target for the Italian side who value his versatility and the ability to cover multiple positions in the team.

The brother and agent of the Swiss international Erdin Shaqiri says the Stoke City winger could be tempted into a January swoop to Serie A, although he remains fully committed to the Premier League club.

“January is far away, there is time to understand the various options. Roma? Never say never”, Erdin Shaqiri was quoted telling Corriere dello Sport.

The 25-year-old winger has had a frustrating start to the new season in England due to injury, much like his side which lingers second from bottom in the Premier League after seven matches with the joint-lowest goal tally in English top tier.

An opportunity for a return to continental action with Giallorossi who are taking part in this year’s edition of the UEFA Champions League might prove to be too big of an incentive for Xherdan Shaqiri in January however.

The Kosovo-born Switzerland international has largely impressed in his debut season with the Potters having made 27 Premier League appearances along with three goals to his name.

In the meantime, Roma return to action following the international break this weekend with a high-profile clash at Napoli. Luciano Spalletti’s men are given the betting odds of 4.00 (3/1) @Coral to emerge victorious from their trip to San Paolo on Saturday.

Giallorossi are currently sitting third in Serie A table having collected 13 points after seven games, trailing the second-placed Partenopei by only one point and the forthcoming game bears great significance for both teams involved.
