Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta believes that the Citizens’ squad ranks above any other in world football.

The Sky Blues get their Champions League campaign underway on Wednesday evening as they come up against Olympique Lyon ranked as one of the favourites to hoist the trophy come the end of the campaign. Despite considerable competition from European powerhouses such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, amongst others, Arteta believes that Manchester City ranks above all of them.

Talking ahead of the clash with Lyon in the absence of Pep Guardiola, the Spaniard said: “For me, we have the best players in the world and I look at our players as if they are the best.

“I wouldn’t change my players for any others. They are absolutely fantastic. The hunger in this group is incredible.”

Whilst the former Arsenal and Everton midfielder highlighted the huge challenge of winning Europe’s elite competition, it something that the reigning Premier League champions should be aiming to do.

Arteta said: “That [winning the Champions League] is the aim. We have a very young squad. They gained a lot of experience in the last two years and we feel we are better prepared.

“But in the Champions League winning or losing is more detailed. We believe we can do better and tomorrow everything starts. We know how hard it is to play against the teams in Europe.”

Manchester City can be backed at 5/1 with bookies Paddy Power to win the Champions League this season.
