Manchester City get their UEFA Champions League campaign underway on Wednesday evening as they host Olympique Lyon at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s men will be aiming to go far in Europe’s elite competition this season, after reaching the quarter-finals last year. The Citizens were ousted by Liverpool 5-1 on aggregate. However, their start to the 2018/19 season has been extremely promising. The reigning Premier League champions have claimed four wins and a draw in the opening five games, their most recent success coming in a 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Fulham.

However, they have lost four out of their last five games in the UEFA Champions League, something that Guardiola will surely want to rectify. Despite that, the Citizens come into the clash with Lyon as huge favourites and can be backed at 1/5 with Betfred to win.

Elsewhere, Lyon have had to endure an inconsistent start to their Ligue 1 campaign. Despite winning their first game against Amiens, Bruno Génésio have only claimed one victory since. As a result, they sit in seventh in the table. Conversely to their opponents, Lyon are huge underdogs for the game with odds of 16/1 available with BetVictor for them to win at the Etihad.

Much like Manchester City, Lyon are yet to reach the final of the Champions League despite their numerous appearances in the competition. Les Gones have appeared 16 times in the competition, with their best finish being in the semi-finals in 2009/10. Although, they have failed to get past the round of 16 in six out of their last seven campaigns. They are not much fancied to hoist the trophy come the end of campaign with odds of 100/1 available.

Opposingly, Manchester City are amongst the favourites to win the competition. Paddy Power boast odds of 5/1 for them to lift the trophy. However, they will have to better their recent record in the Champions League if that is to happen. The Citizens have only ever managed to get beyond the quarter-finals once in their history but they have failed to progress from their group on only one occasion.

One aspect that could hamper the Citizens though is their extensive injury list. Long term absentees Kevin De Bruyne, Eliaquim Mangala, Claudio Bravo and Benjamin Mendy are all ruled out. Although, Sergio Aguero and Danilo could potentially be fit to play. Manager Pep Guardiola will also be missing due to a touchline ban. Lyon only have young striker Amine Gouiri restricted to the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury.

Despite being a slight doubt, Sergio Aguero is the favourite to open the scoring with odds of 11/4 available with BetVictor. Meanwhile, former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele is the favourite to open the scoring for the visitors with odds of 12/1 for him to find the net first at the Etihad.
