Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to completing a big-money move for Benfica starlet Joao Felix.

According to various reports, Diego Simeone’s men have agreed to trigger the buyout clause in the forward’s contract – at a price of approximately £107.3m. Felix is apparently now in Madrid and is set to imminently sign a deal that will see him become the fifth most expensive footballer ever.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, prompting Atletico’s interest in the youngster. In 43 appearances in all competitions throughout the 2018/19 season,  the Portuguese scored 20 goals and provided 11 assists. He also made his debut for the Portugal national team as he started in his nation’s UEFA Nations League semi-final victory over Switzerland this month.

There were also reports suggesting that various European giants were interested in swooping for his signature. His suitors reportedly included the likes of Manchester City.

However, Atleti now appear to have won the race and Felix will be expected to fill the void vacated by Antoine Griezmann who has announced he will be departing the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.

Simeone’s troops currently sit at long odds to win La Liga next season at a price of 16/1 with Paddy Power even with the expected arrival of Felix.
