Italy trainingItaly boss Cesare Prandelli has all but suggested that veteran forwards Francesco Totti and Antonio Di Natale will miss out on the World Cup squad.

There have been calls for the star duo to be included in the Azzurri’s World Cup squad following some scintillating showings this season, but Prandelli has virtually ruled out their appearance at the tournament finals.

Neither of the two players was named among the 42 footballers called to conduct various tests on Monday and Tuesday, and Prandelli has revealed the final squad of 23 players will be chosen from said group.

“These are the players. If there are any emergencies, we would evaluate others,” replied Prandelli when asked whether Totti could return into international reckoning.

“I have the utmost respect for these great players like Totti, Toni and Antonio Di Natale that they deserve a much longer answer than I can give here.

“I therefore prefer to say what I said earlier about Francesco: these are the players we have chosen. If there are emergencies, then we will look elsewhere.”

Roma striker Mattia Destro missed out on the training camp due to the Serie A suspension, but there is a good chance he could receive a call-up in the future having scored 13 goals in just 18 league appearances this season.
