glen johnsonSpanish champions Barcelona are exploring low-cost options for right-back with a couple of names already being lined up by the local media.

Mundo Deportivo have today suggested a list of players Barcelona are believed to be looking at as potential replacements for out-of-favour Aleix Vidal and one particular name has caught plenty of attention.

According to the report, former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson is considered by the Camp Nou outfit and would be one of the most affordable options to play backup to first-choice right-back Sergi Roberto.

Stoke City defender has sent huge waves across the football world not long ago when he was called up by interim England boss Gareth Southgate, before he was forced to pull off from the Three Lions squad through injury.

Johnson is still nursing his injury which is regarded as a potential problem for a possible Barcelona move in January, but Stoke City man is widely expected to make a return before the turn of the year.

Given the fact that other names on Barcelona’s list of potential transfer targets include Shakhtar’s Darijo Srna and Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner who are both cup-tied for the Champions League, Glen Johnson is widely accepted as one of the biggest candidates to fill in the role at Camp Nou.

Despite the element of surprise, Glen Johnson has been given a voice of confidence to be able to succeed at Barcelona should an opportunity for a move to Catalunia presents itself.

Best known for his six-year spell at Liverpool, Glen Johnson has always been an attack-oriented right-back who likes to play further forward, but is defensively poor.

With Barcelona’s free-flowing play concentrated on constant pressing to the opposing half, Glen Johnson could might as well be given an opportunity to display his attacking potential as a right-winger at Barca.

The La Liga champions are playing Granada at the weekend and are looking at the betting odds of 1.67 (4/6) @Bet365 to win to nil at the Saturday night’s encounter at Camp Nou.
