Van Persie NetherlandsFenerbahce striker Robin van Persie has rubbished speculations that he could retire from international duty after Netherlands failed to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals.

The 3-2 home loss to Czech Republic marked the end of a very disappointing qualifying campaign for Oranje, where they finished in fourth place with 13 points from 10 games.

It was Robin van Persie’s own goal that helped Czech Republic record a win at Amsterdam ArenA, and while he later scored on the other end, the former Manchester United striker did not have reason for celebrations.

But, in spite of the poor qualifying campaign and his struggles to get in the first team, the veteran forward has no plans to call his time on the national team.

“I’m not one to run away from difficult situations, I won’t do so now either,” Van Persie told De Telegraaf.

“We will have to bite, for almost a year, on a very sour apple and we must all go through it – the players, the fans, the media, everyone.

“A lot has happened, I’m going to have a quiet think about it. But as I see it now, I’ll just stay available. I still think it’s a great honor to play for Oranje. In good, but also in bad times.

“I’m not someone who runs away from his responsibilities in difficult situations. Giving up is not an option. Though of course it depends on whether I am called.”

World Cup holders Germany have been made the 4.35 (87/20) favourites to lift the Euro 2016 trophy, followed by hosts France, reigning champions Spain and soon-to-be number one in FIFA Rankings Belgium.
