Bert van Marwijk has stepped down from his position as Netherlands boss following Oranje’s disappointing showing at the 2012 European Championship.

The former Feyenoord boss and the man who led Oranje to 2010 World Cup final was heavily criticized for his decisions at the Euro 2012 and especially for the failure to create a proper team spirit within the group.

Netherlands crashed out of the tournament finals after losing all three group games and Van Marwijk subsequently decided to leave his post.

“I had my doubts but I have decided to take this step anyway,” Van Mariwjk explained.

The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) director of professional football Bert van Oostveen thanked the coach for four very successful years at the helm.

“The KNVB are very thankful to Van Marwijk. He did extraordinary work in making a World Cup final and achieving first place in the FIFA rankings.

“I personally look back with very fond memories on our cooperation. Of course it is sad to have to say goodbye now, but we have to be realistic.”

Online bookmakers have yet to publish odds on the next Netherlands boss and the interesting thing is we have yet to learn which Dutch coaches will be in the mix, seeing it is almost certain KNVB will go for domestic coach.
