Sturridge to miss Brazil friendly

Daniel SturridgeEngland boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that striker Daniel Sturridge is going to miss the international friendly against Brazil due to an ankle injury.

The Liverpool forward was handed a rare start in England shirt on Wednesday night as the Three Lions faced Republic of Ireland in a friendly, but he was forced to leave the pitch just after the half-hour mark.

Sturridge picked up an ankle ligament injury in the process and will not be travelling to Rio de Janeiro where England square off against Brazil on Sunday.

“It’s ligament damage, we think,” said Hodgson. “It will definitely keep him out for the Rio game and we think it will keep him out for a few weeks.”

England played out a 1-1 draw with Ireland at Wembley last night as Frank Lampard’s goal midway through the first period cancelled out Shane Long’s opener.

The Three Lions face Brazil for the second time this year, having beaten them 2-1 in February, with Roy Hodgson’s side 5.50 (9/2) with Paddy Power to make it two on the bounce against Seleccao.
