Following England’s disappointing performance in this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil, captain Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from international football.

The Liverpool midfielder won his one hundred and fourteenth and final cap in the goalless draw with Costa Rica in the Three Lions’ final group game last month having made his debut against Ukraine in May 2000.

He was named the permanent captain of his country ahead of the 2012 European Champions, where England bowed out on penalties to eventual runners-up Italy, while he has featured at no less than six major tournaments in total.

He has twenty-one international goals, the last of which coming in the 2-0 win over Poland – a result which assured qualification for the 2014 World Cup, which has turned out to be his last hurrah as an England player.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the odds on favourite to be named as Gerrard’s replacement as Roy Hodgson’s captain with Sky Bet offering a price of just 1.2 (1/5).

The 28 year old has led England out on just two occasions, though only Gerrard and Frank Lampard had had the honour bestowed on them more times of anyone in the squad that travelled to South America last month.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart, who has regularly been spoken of as a potential England captain of the future, is next in the market at 5.5 (9/2) with Sky Bet.

Hart took the armband from Rooney in a 5-0 win over San Marino in October 2012, and if named as Gerrard’s successor will look to beat Peter Shilton’s total of fifteen caps as captain, which he achieved during his illustrious international career.

Other names in the frame are Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, who can be backed at 13.0 (12/1), Gerrard’s Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson at 17.0 (16/1) and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere, who is a 26.0 (25/1) shot.

England’s next match is a friendly against Norway at Wembley on September 2nd, while they begin qualification for the 2016 European Championships with a trip to Switzerland six days later.
