Selection problems mounting for Capello

Tottenham forward Jermaine Defoe was forced to pull out from the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland because of a wrist injury.

The diminutive forward played full 90 minutes in Spurs’ final game of the season against Birmingham City, but has informed England boss Fabio Capello that he won’t be able to feature due to a wrist injury.

This comes as a real blow for the Italian manager considering that Wayne Rooney was already set to miss the game through suspension, while Liverpool duo Andy Carroll and Steven Gerrard are out through injuries.

In-form Aston Villa striker Darren Bent is expected to start as a lone forward after bagging in every one of his last three games for England, while his teammate Ashley Young could slot in just behind him.

Peter Crouch and Bobby Zamora are the other two strikers in the squad, but they will have to settle for a place on the bench.

Elsewhere, Robert Green has been called to replace David Stockdale, who is getting married on 3 June and has, therefore, pulled out of the squad.

England currently lead the race in group G after taking 10 points from first 4 games and they are 1.44 (4/9) with Victor Chandler to beat Switzerland at Wembley.

England squad:
