Richard DunneFormer Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has made a shock return into action as he trained with Republic of Ireland squad on Sunday.

The veteran defender was released by Aston Villa after missing the last year through groin and back problems, but he has finally made the long-awaited return.

Dunne was put through his paces by the Republic of Ireland coaching staff at a training camp near Watford and he is even considered for Wednesday’s friendly against England.

“He is important for our future. We have spoken to the doctor and the situation is delicate with his club and we don’t want to make a new injury,” Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni said.

“I have spoken with him and he has no club at the moment but we need him for the future. I told Richard we will help him as he deserves respect. Another injury would be a blow for him but we hope he can play.”

Republic of Ireland face England in an international friendly on Wednesday and they are 8.50 (15/2) with Stan James to beat their more illustrious opponents at Wembley.

Paul Green misses out through injury, while James McCarthy is doubtful with a hamstring problem. Captain Robbie Keane is set to join the squad after scoring a hat-trick for his club at the weekend.
