Portugal vs IcelandFollowing the 7-0 hammering of Estonia in the dress rehearsal, Portugal take on Iceland in their opening Euro 2016 fixture.

The Nordic side are making their first ever appearance at the European Championships and they will be very motivated to prove their worth.

Portugal bosses had no choice but to sack Paulo Bento after the disappointing exit from the 2014 World Cup and opening defeat to Albania in the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

That proved to be a very good decision seeing that his successor Fernando Santos went on to win remaining seven qualifiers, as Selecao secured the first place in their group.

The team have since experienced some problems in warm-up matches as the boss was searching for the most suitable formation, but things appear to have fallen into place.

Santos overcame the lack of centre forwards by playing wingers Ronaldo, Nani and Quaresma in forward positions and that seems to be a very good solution, as witnessed by impressive wins over Belgium and Estonia.

The Besiktas winger especially shone in matches against Norway and Estonia, and he is now pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

And with Iceland far from impressive at the moment, it is hardly surprising the Selecao have been made 1.62 (5/8) favourites to claim maximum points.

There are some doubts regarding the fitness of Ricardo Quaresma, who is battling a muscle injury, meaning he could be left on the bench.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2 diamond): Patricio – Cedric, Pepe, Carvalho, Eliseu – Danilo Pereira, Joao Mario, Moutinho, Andre Gomes – Nani, Ronaldo.

Iceland surprised everyone with some excellent performances in one of the toughest groups in the Euro 2016 Qualifying, and they eventually secured their maiden appearance at the Euros.

The Nordic side did really well to finish above both Turkey and Netherlands, although the team have largely struggled in international friendlies.

Iceland have played incredible nine games since the qualifying campaign ended, losing no fewer than six of those, and only beating Finland, Greece and Liechtenstein.

As a result, their fans can only hope that the team will be able to rediscover the excellent form their showed in the qualifiers, and the Portugal game will be the first major test.

There have been no reported injuries in the Iceland camp, although coach Lars Lagerback appears to have a number of dilemmas with regards to the starting line-up.

Talented midfielder Arnor Ingvi Traustason is pushing for a starting berth, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson should be preferred to Jon Bodvarsson.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Kristinsson – Saevarsson, Arnason, R. Sigurdsson, Skulason – Gudmundsson, Gunnarsson, G. Sigurdsson, Bjarnason – Sigthorsson, Finnbogason.
