England kicks off their Under-21 European Championship campaign with the match against tournament favourites Spain, but boss Stuart Pearce believes the Three Lions have no reason to fear their more illustrious opponents.

Pearce will be without several key players such as Jack Wilshire, Kieran Gibbs, Andy Carroll and Micah Richards, but the former Manchester City boss is adamant his side can beat Spain.

“The Spanish are decent, but they didn’t win their qualifying group,” Pearce was quoted as saying.

“Last time we came up against them we beat them 2-0. Our Under-17s turned them over, our Under-19s drew with them.”

“Spain are an exciting nation at the moment. They have talented players. Barcelona are a great team. It excites me to watch them, learning from them. I don’t fear that.”

England are heavily relying on Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge to produce goals against very good Spain side and with the youngster bagging 8 goals in 12 league games for Bolton this season, the odds of 2.75 (7/4) offered by Paddy Power on Sturridge to be England’s top scorer at the competition look too good to pass.

Meanwhile, England are 3.80 (14/5) to win the game at Betfair, while they are no less than 6.00 (5/1) with William Hill to lift the Under-21 European Championship title.
