Pablo AimarPablo Aimar has ended a long spell on the sidelines by featuring in the final 15 minutes of River Plate’s league clash with Rosario Central.

The 35-year-old returned to his boyhood club back in January, but a succession of injuries saw him miss next six months of action.

Aimar received a warm welcome as he came onto the pitch at the weekend, with everybody at the club, including coach Marcelo Gallardo, delighted with his return.

“The feeling in the air was the joy of seeing a child of the house returned after a long time with great effort,” Gallardo said.

“He had the opportunity to be happy on the pitch, which was what we all wanted. We are happy for his appearances. Hopefully this is the beginning, to follow and to have continuity.”

River Plate fans will be hoping to see Aimar in the final stages of the Copa Libertadores, with the Millionaires 2.50 (3/2) favourites for the trophy after hammering Cruzeiro in the second leg of the quarter-finals.

During his previous spell with River, the veteran midfielder made 82 league appearances and scored 21 goals before joining Valencia.
