McGeady and Pilkington miss out for Ireland

McGeady IrelandMidfielders Aiden McGeady and Anthony Pilkington have both been ruled out for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria.

Republic of Ireland face two crucial matches in their attempt to reach the second major tournament in a row, but boss Giovanni Trapattoni has been dealt with a huge blow at the start of team’s preparations.

Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady has failed to make the final squad due to a knee injury, while Norwich midfielder Anthony Pilkington and Hull defender Pall McShane are also out.

Kevin Doyle, Joey O’Brien and Stephan Ward are the high-profile names cut from the provisional squad, whilst Derby County midfielder Jeffrey Hendrick keeps his place in the side.

Republic of Ireland play Sweden in Stockholm on Friday before playing host to Austria in Dublin four days later.

Ireland currently sit one point adrift of third-placed Sweden, and they are as much as 6.00 (5/1) at William Hill to qualify for the tournament finals.
