iceland-vs-turkeyIceland are flying high after the amazing comeback against Finland, and they now have the opportunity to seriously improve their qualifying chances.

Turkey, on the other hand, salvaged one point at home against Ukraine, but the question is whether they would be happy with third straight draw.

Iceland surprised everyone by making it to the Euro 2016 finals, and they quickly prove they were not there just to make up the numbers.

The Nordic side impressed to reach the quarter-finals, defeating Austria and England in the process before they were stopped by hosts France.

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Iceland were determined to prove the summer’s success was no accident, and they are again showing a great deal of character.

Strakarnir okkar first held Ukraine to a 1-1 draw in Kiev, although they were fortunate to have Yevhen Konoplyanka miss a late penalty, before they put on a late show to beat Finland.

Iceland entered the final stretch trailing one goal, but goals from Alfred Finnbogason and Ragnar Sigurdsson proved enough for a 3-2 triumph.

The Nordic side are now 2.40 (7/5) to see off Turkey, the team they hammered 3-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier some two years ago.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Kristinsson – Saevarson, Arnason, R. Sigurdsson, Skulason – Bjarnason, Gunnarsson, G. Sigurdsson, Gudmundsson – Sigurdarson, Finnbogasson.

Even if they headed to France with a squad packed with quality and experience, Turkey were largely disappointing at the Euro 2016 finals, and head coach Fatih Terim decided to make serious cuts ahead of the new campaign.

A number of star players were removed from the squad, which did not prove such a big problem as Milli Takim went on to produce two decent performances.

Turkey first held very good Croatia side to a 1-1 draw in Zagreb, before earning a 2-2 draw at home against Ukraine.

The hosts were in problems as Ukraine scored two early goals, but they turned things around and managed to earn one point as Ozan Tufan and Hakan Calhanoglu both scored.

Turkey will need to start winning soon if they want to make it to Russia, but they probably would not be too disappointed if they share spoils with Iceland as well.

Nuri Sahin and Gokhan Tore didn’t even make the squad, whereas Oguzhan Ozyakup and Gokhan Gonul miss out through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Babacan – Ozbayrakli, Toprak, Balta, Erkin – Mor, Topal, Tufan, Calhanoglu – Unal, Tosun.
