Hungary vs Croatia preview

Italy vs CroatiaHungary surprisingly opted for a single friendly in March and they will be eager to extend the bright run of results when they face injury-hit Croatia.

Vatreni enjoyed a comfortable win over Israel few days ago, but they will have bigger fish to fry at Groupama Arena in Budapest.

Once one of world’s top sides have endured some tough times of late, but Hungary have finally managed to qualify for the first major tournament since 1986.

Foci almost made a mess out of their qualifying campaign as they recorded just one win from last four to finish in third place, but they made amends by beating Norway in the play-offs.

Hungary will be vying Austria, Iceland and Portugal for a place in the Euro 2016 last 16 stage, and they clearly face a difficult task.

There were no major surprises in Bernd Strock’s squad for the Croatia game, although MTK Budapest defender Barnabas Bese gets a chance to win his first cap.

Daniel Tozser continues to be overlooked, whereas Tamas Kadar and Gergo Lovrencsics both miss out through injury.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Kiraly – Fiola, Guzmics, Juhasz, Leandro – Elek, Nagy – Dzsudzsak, Nemeth, Kleinheisler – Priskin.

Croatia have experienced all sorts of problems after Slaven Bilic left the national team and the controversial appointment of Ante Cacic did nothing to improve the situation.

Vatreni somehow managed to secure their place at the tournament finals, but their fans fear that the abundance of individual talent will not matter much unless the new coach can rebuild the team spirit.

Cacic decided to experiment with his back line against Israel, starting with three central defenders, and while his side did not concede, the defence has failed to impress.

Chances are he will now revert to four at the back, meaning that Domagoj Vida will start at left-back, which should not be a problem considering he has played on the left flank at Dynamo Kiev.

While Ivan Rakitic and Mrako Pjaca pulled out through injury, Fiorentina duo Nikola Kalinic and Milan Badelj have left the squad after struggling with a bout of flu.

And with captain Darijo Srna a major doubt, there is not a great deal of value in odds of 2.05 (21/20) offered at William Hill on away win.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Subasic – Vrsaljko, Lovren, Corluka, Vida – Modric, Brozovic – Kovacic, Halilovic, Perisic – Mandzukic.
