Ireland vs SwedenNewcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot and Southampton striker Shane Long are expected to start against Slovakia on Tuesday evening, according to reports.

Manager Martin O’Neill has revealed that he will play both keepers in March friendlies and with Darren Randolph having started the Switzerland game, it is now Rob Elliot’s turn to shine.

The boss faces a serious attacking crisis considering that Robbie Keane, Jonathan Walters, Kevin Doyle and Daryl Murphy have all withdrawn.

This means that Shane Long is almost certain to start up front, although Martin O’Neill admits he could play James McClean in attack.

“James McClean has played up front before – I’ve seen him play for Wigan there and he’s done exceptionally well,” said O’Neill.

After using a 4-4-2 formation against Switzerland, O’Neill is expected to revert to 4-2-3-1 for the Slovakia game, where his side are 2.30 (13/10) to make it five home wins in a row.
