Copa America: Uruguay vs Mexico preview

Having picked up just two points from as many games, Uruguay have got to win this match in order to go through, whereas Mexico could squeeze into the quarter-finals with three points from this clash despite losing their opening two games.

Oscar Tabarez’s team arrived in Argentina as one of the main candidates for the trophy, following their impressive showing at the 2010 World Cup, but we cannot really say La Celeste have justified the favourites’ tag just yet.

Uruguay had a lot of problems at the start of the tournament and could only pick up two points from as many games, meaning that this is a must-win game for them.

Considering that Mexico are the weakest team in the group, you should considered backing Uruguay at odds of 1.53 (8/15) offered by Bet365.

Oscar Tabarez faces certain selection problems as Edison Cavani and Diego Godin miss out through injury, whereas Martin Caceres is suspended.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Muslera – Maxi Pereira, Lugano, Victorino, Alvaro Pereira – A. Gonzalez, Perez, Arevalo, C. Rodriguez- Forlan, Suarez.

After everything that followed this Mexico side in the build up to this tournament, it is more than clear that two starting defeats are not a surprise to anyone.

The Under-22 coach Luis Fernando Tena was given a chance to lead this team as he is the man who knows these players better than anyone, but he hasn’t had a lot of success so far.

The coach is certainly not the only one to blame as he was forced to face the best South American sides with what is a third string line-up and I cannot see how El Tri will get something from the game with very motivated Uruguay side.

The boss will try to counter the attacking threat of Uruguay by deploying a defence-minded tactics, even if Mexico will need a win in order to go through.

Probable starting line-up (5-3-1-1): Michel – Aguilar, Araujo, Reynoso, Mier, Reyes – Chávez, Aquino, Enríquez – Dos Santos – Márquez Lugo.
