Confederations Cup: Spain vs Uruguay preview

Spain vs Uruguay 3-1The most interesting match of the opening round at the 2013 Confederations Cup will see European champions Spain square off against Copa America winners Uruguay.

In an interantional friendly played in February 2013, la Furia Roja ran out 3-1 winners, but la Celeste will be certainly looking to fare much better this time out.

The 4-0 triumph over Italy in the European Championship 2012 final saw Spain become the first ever national team to win three straight major tournaments, having previously won the Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup.

La Furia Roja have since played without any pressure, and while home draws against Finland and France threatened to hurt their World Cup bid, the team quickly returned to the right track.

The 1-0 away victory over les Bleus proved Spain always perform well under pressure, and that is one of the reasons they are among the main candidates for the 2013 Confederations Cup trophy.

Seeing as how la Furia Roja have never won this competition, there is a lot of value in odds of 2.75 (7/4) offered at Paddy Power on Spain to lift the trophy.

Vicente Del Bosque’s side used friendlies against Haiti and Ireland to prepare for the tournament finals and they seem to be high on spirits at the moment.

With Xabi Alonso the only important absentee, Spain look a good bet to see off Uruguay at odds of 1.62 (5/8) offered at BetFred.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Casillas – Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Alba – Xavi, Martinez, Iniesta – Pedro, Villa, Silva.

Uruguay have seriously raised their profile over the years, having reached the 2010 World Cup semis, before winning the 2011 Copa America title.

Everything looked to be according to plan in their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign as Oscar Tabarez’s side picked up no less than 11 points from the first 5 fixtures.

However, the dismal run of results saw la Celeste take just two points from next six matches, leaving them on the brink of huge failure.

Buoyed by the friendly victory over France, Uruguay finally managed to return to the right track as they defeated Venezuela away, and the triumph should keep them in good stead for the start of the Confederations Cup.

La Celeste are by no means favourites against Spain, but with the likes of Cavani and Suarez up front, they might just manage to score a goal. They are 1.73 (8/11) with Stan James to do so.

Luis Suarez returns to the side from suspension, with Diego Forlan likely to make way for the Liverpool striker.

Probable starting line-up (4-4-2): Muslera – M. Pereira, Lugano, Godin, Caceres – Ramirez, Perez, Gargano, C. Rodriguez – Cavani, Suarez.
