Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund preview

Even if Bayern Munich have all but secured yet another league trophy, chances are that the high-profile clash against Borussia Dortmund will be just as interesting as in recent years.

The Millionaires are determined to prove they are not too far behind the Bavarians at the moment, and at the same time improve their chances of clinching an automatic Champions League berth.

Bayern Munich have just suffered the second defeat of the Bundesliga campaign as they were beaten by red-hot Hoffenheim, but that is unlikely to prove a major issue.

The Bavarians still hold a ten-point advantage at the top and with games against Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid coming up, Carlo Ancelotti had no choice but to rest some key men in midweek.

Even if the Champions League clash against los Blancos has the priority, chances are the Italian will field a strong side against the Millionaires, as this match is all about prestige.

The Bavarians have won last six matches at Allianz Arena, scoring 26 and conceding just one goal, but the Saturday’s game will be no walk in the park.

Thomas Muller, Douglas Costa and Manuel Neuer are all set to miss out, but Philipp Lahm, Thiago Alcantara and Franck Ribery will be recalled.

Probable starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Ulreich – Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba – Alonso, Vidal – Robben, Thiago, Ribery – Lewandowski.

Borussia Dortmund were unable to mount a serious title challenge in this year’s Bundesliga, but they can still turn the current season into a success.

Securing automatic Champions League berth would go a long way towards that goal, while the Millionaires are also vying Monaco for a place in the last four of Europe’s elite competition and they will face Bayern in the DFB Pokal final.

Borussia have done fairly well of late, winning three of last four fixtures, but they managed to win just two of last seven games on the road.

That could be a cause for concern ahead of the trip to Allianz Arena, where the Millionaires are 5.50 (9/2) to shock their more illustrious opponents.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel welcomes back Sokratis Papastathopoulos from suspension, but Marcel Schmelzer is rated doubtful.

Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze, Erik Durm and Sebastian Rode are definitely unavailable for selection.

Probable starting line-up (4-1-4-1): Burki – Piszczek, Sokratis, Bartra, Schmelzer – Weigl – Pulisic, Kagawa, Castro, Dembele – Aubameyang.
