Angers vs PSG preview

PSG vs MonacoThe surprise package of the season climbed to third as they defeated Lille at the weekend and now head into the PSG clash without any pressure.

The Saints, on the other hand, are eager to make it ten wins on the bounce in Ligue 1 despite boasting a 13-point cushion at the league summit.

Having returned to the top flight after a 21-year absence, Angers didn’t have much to hope for, apart from secretly hoping they would be able to beat the drop.

And after failing to properly reinforce their ranks over the summer, le SCO were seen as one of the main candidates for the drop, but, as that often happens in football, the minnows would quickly prove the doubters wrong.

Angers went on to enjoy a remarkable start to the Ligue 1 campaign, taking 26 points from first 15 matches to climb to third in the overall standings.

Le SCO did fail to score in four consecutive games recently, but they have since returned to the right track, with weekend’s 2-0 triumph over Lille acting as a major confidence boost.

Angers will now attempt to become the first side to prevent PSG from winning a league game in over two months, although that is easier said than done.

Coach Stephane Moulin has no fresh injuries to contend with, although the likes of Fode Dore, Slimane Sissoko and Bilel Mohsni remain in the treatment room.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Butelle – Manceau, Traore, Thomas, Andreu – N’Doye, Saiss, Mangani – Sunu, Ketkeophomphone, Camara.

Just 15 games into the new season and PSG are the only serious candidate for the league trophy, as it would take a genuine miracle for Laurent Blanc’s side to squander a 13-point advantage at the top.

The Saints have been quite convincing so far, winning 13 games and scoring 37 goals in the process, while conceding mere 8, which is oddly enough, just one fewer than Angers.

And even though the team would be forgiven if they were to become complacent, Laurent Blanc has a good reason why his side should continue to increase their lead at the Ligue 1 summit.

Namely, PSG want to secure the league trophy before decisive Champions League matches begin so that they can try and mount a serious title challenge in Europe’s elite competition.

This is why they will be very motivated to record the tenth straight victory in the league, and they are 1.33 (1/3) to succeed in their quest.

Laurent Blanc could have both Javier Pastore and Serge Aurier back to the side, but Marco Verratti misses out through injury and Ezequiel Lavezzi is doubtful.

Probable starting line-up (4-3-3): Trapp – van der Wiel, Marquinhos, Luiz, Maxwell – Rabiot, Stambouli, Matuidi – Lucas Moura, Ibrahimovic, Cavani.
