Sporting keen on former Benfica starlet

MarkovicThe 22-year-old Serbian winger and former Benfica star player Lazar Markovic is a transfer target for Sporting CP.

Still a Liverpool player, Markovic never really managed to impress at Anfield as he was hugely disappointing under Brendan Rodgers in his first season in the Premier League.

Markovic scored three goals in 23 starts and was loaned out to Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce.

The 22-year-old Serbian played 14 matches in Turkish Super Lig, ten of which were starts. Markovic failed to score a single goal in the league.

Back on Merseyside for preseason training, Lazar Markovic is expected to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window and according to Portugal media outlet Record, Benfica’s greatest rivals Sporting CP are keen to sign the Serbian.

Having in mind that Markovic became a household name at the Estadio da Luz, the Serbian winger should expect a heated welcome to Portugal should a deal go through.

The Markovic transfer rumour might have serious grounds knowing that Sporting manager Jorge Jesus was the one to give Lazar Markovic a chance to shine at Benfica.

Jesus even confirmed that Sporting have made initial contact with Lazar Markovic in relation to a possible transfer to Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Sporting CP are currently looking at the betting odds of 7/2 (4.5) @BetVictor to be crowned Primeira Liga champions in 2016/17 season but there is no doubt that potential arrival of the talented Serbian winger would increase their chances.
