Second plays third at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon as Southampton host champions Manchester City.

Ronald Koeman’s men scored a late equaliser at Aston Villa last time out to extend their latest unbeaten run to five games, and move to within six points of leaders Chelsea.

The South Coast club have lost just twice so far this season, and will open up a five point lead over last season’s title winners if they register what would be a ninth league win of the season this weekend.

Saints have no fresh injury concerns, and Steven Davis could return after missing Monday’s game at Villa Park with a hamstring problem.

Graziano Pelle is priced at 7.5 (13/2) to open the scoring with a variety of firms, with Morgan Schneiderlin worth considering at a generous 21.0 (20/1) with Bet 365.

The home win is widely available at 3.5 (5/2), with the visitors favourites at 2.45 (29/20) with Bet Victor. The draw is a 3.2 (11/5) chance with William Hill.

City came from behind to beat Swansea City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend, and followed that by scoring two late goals against German champions Bayern Munich to secure victory in their crucial Champions League tie in Manchester on Tuesday evening.

Three points here would see them leapfrog Southampton and build pressure on leaders Chelsea, though Jose Mourinho’s side could be as many as nine points clear at the top by the time this game kicks off.

Manuel Pellegrini will be without injured trio Edin Dzeko, Aleksander Kolarov and David Silva, though Yaya Toure and Fernadinho could return after missing out midweek through suspension.

Top scorer Sergio Aguero is unsurprisingly favourite to get the first goal of the game at 5.5 (9/2) with Paddy Power with Stevan Jovetic at 7.5 (13/2) with Bet 365.

Last season’s corresponding fixture ended 1-1 almost twelve months ago, with City running out 4-1 winners at the Etihad Stadium back in April.

In fact, both teams have scored in seven of the last eight meetings between the sides, so you may want to back them to do so this time around at 1.65 (13/10) with Ladbrokes.
