Vigil van DijkBBC Scotland is reporting that Southampton are stepping up their efforts to sign Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Saints are in the market for a central defender after seeing Toby Alderweireld leave and the Dutch stopper has now emerged as their top target.

Southampton have now opened talks with Celtic even if they have yet to submit an official proposal for the 24-year-old footballer.

Virgil van Dijk joined the Bhoys from Groningen two years ago and he has largely impressed since, starting 74 SPL fixtures and scoring 9 goals.

He has been linked with a number of top Premier League clubs of late and it looks as though St Mary’s will be his next destination.

Southampton enjoyed a good start to the new league campaign, holding Newcastle to a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park and they are now 3.75 (11/4) to achieve a top 6 finish.
