Newcastle United vs Liverpool Preview

Sixth plays eighth as Newcastle United host struggling Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, a fixture that evokes memories of arguably the greatest game of the Premier League era.

It is sixteen years ago this weekend since that incredible 4-3 win for Roy Evans’ Liverpool. which all but ended Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle’s chances of securing a first league title in almost seventy years.

Before this weekend, only the top three have picked up more points in the last eight games than Alan Pardew’s men, who still harbour hopes of defying all expectation by securing fourth position, and a place in next seasons Champions League qualifying round.

However, despite their impressive form, they are outsiders for this fixture, with Bet Victor offering the best price of 3.125 (85/40). Remarkable, considering the contrasting form of their opponents, who are 2.5 (6/4) with Ladbrokes.

Only relegation threatened Queens Park Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers have picked up fewer points than Liverpool in the last eight games before this latest run of fixtures. Had the season started on January the 1st, the Reds would find themselves in the relegation zone.

With tricky trips to Blackburn, Norwich and Swansea, and a visit from Chelsea among their remaining fixtures, there is a realistic possibility that Kenny Dalglish’s men could end the season in their worst position since the inception of the Premier League.

All eyes will be on £35 million striker Andy Carroll, who has stated that he will not celebrate should he score against the team where he made his name.

However, the England striker hasn’t had cause to celebrate in a league game since he netted in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers eight games ago. He is best priced 3.4 (12/5) with Bet 365 to score at any time.

A Craig Bellamy double helped Liverpool come from behind to eventually run out 3-1 winners in the return fixture at Anfield at the end of December.

That win put Liverpool level on points with then fourth place Chelsea, but a run which has seen them win just two games since then, has seen the five times European Champions fall away.
